Cini & Nils was established in 1969, when two innovative Italian designers began the journey to present their creations directly to the market. A wide range of designs were developed and perfected in the newly formed collaboration between Mario Melocchi and Franco Bettonica, and many of these early designs have since been included in the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) collection. These early Cini & Nils designs, now widely acknowledged as Twentieth Century Design Classics, include Bar, Table and Desk collections, Swivel magazine stand, Cubobar and Game Table. Towards the end of the seventies, a New Wave of design led Mario Melocchi and Franco Bettonica to explore new areas, and the Cini & Nils story began in earnest!

Flos blossomed from a brilliant idea: create objects, starting with a light bulb, that will change the way of life in both the Italian and international markets. Dino Gavina and the small Eisenkeil manufacturing facility in Merano, had already been creating furniture alongside design masters such as Achille CastiglioniPier Giacomo Castiglioni, Afra Scarpa, and Tobia Scarpa. But by the early 1960s, Dino Gavina became convinced the time had come to create new lamps. Using the same technology, originally conceived and developed in the USA, as that used for the Cocoon lamp, the Castiglioni brothers and the Scarpa duo began creating lamps such as the Taraxacum and Fantasma, with many other beautiful and surprising lamps soon to follow.
